Keeping Your Beagle Safe

Overview of Beagle Safety

Of course you want the best for your pet and you do not want your Beagle to be harmed or lost.

Keeping your Beagle safe will include taking steps depending on:
Let's take a look at what an owner should do to keep everyone happy and safe.

Puppies

It is very important to "Puppy Proof" your home.  It is best to do this before you bring your new puppy home. This breed's natural curiosity can prompt a pup to get into places you did not think possible!  You will want to:
  • Put child locks on all low cabinets within reach of your baby Beagle or adult... they can reach harmful substances at any age.
  • Always be on the look out for small objects on the floors or on low places such as a coffee table.  We have seen pup's who were poisoned by swallowing pennies and others who choked on cigarettes!  Put any small objects up high where your puppy cannot reach them
  • Be aware of house plants...most are toxic to dogs.  While one may not immediately think that a dog would want to eat a plant or flowers...some chew on them simply out of boredom or to find out what they are.  Dogs use their noses and mouth to explore the world...and a dog normally wants to learn about everything!
  • Beware of tying your Beagle to a cabinet latch or other.  Some puppies have strangled themselves when tied up and left alone...as the leash gets caught and the pup cannot move.  The best alternative is to gate off an area and allow your dog to stay safely there while you are not home.  We do not recommend crating a pup for a long period of time. Would you like to be put in a crate all day?
Beagle of Any Age

The Beagle is guided by their nose...and will want to follow any scent that he or she picks up.  This is built into the dog, as the instinct as a hound dog is strong.  Therefore, it is very important to never allow your Beagle to be alone outside.  Even in an enclose area such as a fenced in yard, a dog can wiggle under a fence, jump over one or squeeze through the gate.  Once they pick up the scent of a squirrel, rabbit or other little creatures...your dog can be off and running before you know it.  Instilling solid training will help.

Microchips

Beagle to be alone outside.  Even in an enclose area such as a fenced in yard, a dog can wiggle under a fence, jump over one or squeeze through the gate.  Once they pick up the scent of a squirrel, rabbit or other little creatures...your dog can be off and running before you know it.  While it seems to be a fast spreading rumor, microchips do not cause cancer in dogs. This rumor may have begun when studies were done on rats, inserting multiple chips.

There are no studies that show a microchip is dangerous...and there are 1000's of instances when having one helped to find a lost dog.  Since the urge to run can be strong when this breed picks up a scent, you may want to think about microchipping your Beagle.

Exercise / Rabbit Hunting Safety

The 2 most important elements of safety out in the field are:
  • Knowing the signs of canine Heat Exhaustion
  • Being aware of rattlesnakes, if you live in an area which contains them
Being out in the hot sun = needing plenty of water and taking rests in the shade.  If your Beagle begins to show signs of Heat Exhaustion (weakness, confusion, difficulty breathing, falling down) it is extremely important to cool your dog down before going to the veterinarian or animal hospital.  If you rush your dog into the car, you will often be putting them into a hot environment; they must be slowly cooled down first.

This can be done by gently putting your dog into the shade (if outside) or into a cool room (if you can get to a house).

You must then apply cool water to your Beagle (NOT cold water).

If you have a fan, use it to allow a breeze to blow onto your dog

Once your Beagle seems to be recovering, you should then bring him or her to the closest veterinarian or animal hospital.
