The Beagle Vs Other Breeds
Overview
While the Beagle may be one of the most amazing breeds in the world, he does have some competition, to say the least. The Fédération Cynologique Internationale (FCI) recognizes a whooping 300+ breeds and while the AKC recognizes quite a bit less, 200+, this still leaves quite a few dog breeds that can be compared to the Beagle.
Why compare the Beagle to other breeds?
There are lots of reasons, some for fun and other for more practical reasons. This might include:
- Seeing how your own dog differs from other breeds that you might have chosen instead
- Learning about breeds that are similar to the Beagle in some ways
- Finding out how a Beagle would get along with another breed
What types of comparisons can be done?
This is where it gets both fun and interesting to see how the Beagle stacks up to other breeds. There are many ways of comparing the Beagle with other dogs including:
- Size
- It can be interesting to see the Beagle side-by-side with other breeds that have comparable or differing size.
- Coloring - The Beagle is famous for his hound coloring
and it is quite beautiful; however, quite a few other types of dogs also have hound coloring and it can be interesting to see how the coat can be similar across various breeds.
- Scenting ability - While canines in general have amazing senses in comparison to humans, it is his scenting ability where the Beagle truly shines. This said, other breeds have also been developed to have excellent scenting and it can be enlightening to see how the Beagle compares in this aspect.
- History - We can go far back and trace the Beagle's ancestors
to ancient dogs of Greece; however, the country of origin for today's modern Beagle is England. Many other breeds were developed there as well and for similar purposes.
- Traits and temperament - The Beagle had quite a journey from being in packs to hunt
to being in the living room as a treasured canine family member. He has transitioned well; however, he is still often ruled by his nose and can seemingly have boundless energy. It can be interesting to compare the Beagle to other breeds that may also have his strong level of both curiosity and activity level.
The Beagle Vs Other Breeds in General
Here are some interesting statistics and facts:
- The Beagle is considered to be a medium dog breed. Though some breeds are placed in different groups by different sources, there a bit over 60 toy and small breeds, about 40 large breeds and 17 giant breeds.
The majority of dogs are alongside the Beagle in size (medium dogs are those that are between 20 and 40 pounds). This includes such dogs as the Bulldog, English Springer Spaniel and the American Cocker Spaniel.

- The Beagle is in the hound group. There are 30 dogs, including the Beagle, in this AKC grouping. Some look very similar to Beagles and some do not.
They are the Afghan Hound, American English Coonhound, American Foxhound, Basenji, Basset Hound, Beagle, Black and Tan Coonhound, Bloodhound...
Bluetick Coonhound, Borzoi, Cirneco Dell'enta, Dachshund, English Foxhound, Greyhound, Harrier, Irish Wolfhound, Norwegian Elkhound, Otterhound, Petit Basset Griffon Vendeen...Pharaoh Hound, Plott, Portuguese Podengo Pequeno, Redbone Coonhound, Rhodesian Ridgeback, Saluki, Scottish Deerhound, Sloughi, Treeing Walker Coonhound, and the Whippet.

- Though the Beagle is well-known for his hound colors, not all dogs in the hound group have his sort of coloring; for example, the Black and Tan Coonhound can only be found in, you guessed it, black and tan.
And other breeds outside of the hound group can have the same black/tan/white color combinations often seen with the Beagle. This would include the Bernese Mountain Dog and the Papillon.

- When you look at all of the dog breeds of today and the country of origin, the list is literally from A to Z. There are breeds are originated in Argentina and even one from Zimbabwe (the Rhodesian Ridgeback).
The Beagle was developed in England; In total 51 dog breeds originated in England. This includes such dogs as the Cavalier King Charles Spaniel, Flat-Coated Retriever, Norfolk Spaniel, Russell Terrier and the Tweed Water Spaniel.

- The AKC was founded in 1884. The Beagle was recognized just one year later in 1885.
There were only 15 breeds in total that were registerable that year (some were also officially recognized and with others, this last step came later). The complete list is: Basset Hound, Beagle, Bloodhound, Bull Terrier, Collie, Dachshund, Fox Terrier, Greyhound, Harrier, Irish Terrier, Mastiff, Pug, Saint Bernard, Scottish Terrier, and the Yorkshire Terrier.
Just about two decades later in 1904, dogs such as the Boxer, Schipperke and the Chihuahua were able to be registered.
Moving ahead 50 years to 1935, and 3 breeds were added: the Alaskan Malamute, Lhasa Apso and the Welsh Corgi (Cardigan).
Look 70 years past the Beagle's acceptance and in comes the Rhodesian Ridgeback in 1955 and the Silky Terrier a few years later in 1959.
Jump ahead 98 years to 1983, and the Pharoah Hound
was accepted as its own breed.
How were breeds chosen for a side-by-side comparison?
With technically over 340 different dog breeds to choose from, we're going to be starting with the breeds that we feel that you would be most interested in.
This will be a project that we will continually work to add onto, in addition to adding other pages of interest as time goes on.
